Advising Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get admitted to Engineering?

For incoming high school students (freshmen) you apply online through the Admissions Office and get your test scores (ACT or SAT) and high school academic record sent to the Admissions Office.  For the class of 2010, you must have a Success Prediction Indicator (SPI) of 60.  This is determined using the 14 core units from high school GPA added to the ACT/SAT Math subscore.  For more information click here  http://www.engr.utk.edu/futurestudents/admission.html

For incoming Transfer students who have attended community colleges, other 4 year colleges or universities, you apply online through the Admissions Office as Transfer students.  In addition to the UT admission requirements, transfer students for engineering majors also need as a minimum for consideration a cumulative GPA of 2.30 and grades of C or better in English 101, Math 141 and Chemistry 120 (or any lab science if you are a Computer Science major).  Transfer applicants are first reviewed by the Admissions Office and then by the major of choice in Engineering.

For students already attending UT, you will need to meet with an advisor in the Engineering Advising Office.  You also need to have a minimum for consideration a cumulative GPA of 2.30 and grades of C or better in English 101, Math 141 and Chemistry 120 (or any lab science if you are a Computer Science major).

For International students, you apply online and follow the Admissions Office guidelines.  International students are reviewed both by the Admissions Office and the Engineering major of choice.

How do I apply for scholarships?

All students apply for scholarships using the application provided online by the Financial Aid & Scholarship Office.  The deadline is always February 1.  This one application will allow students to be considered for all levels of scholarships- University, College of Engineering, and Engineering majors.

How do I apply to live in the Engage Learning Community in Morrill Hall?

Freshman students who are not living with a parent or guardian are required to live in university housing during their first year of college. The College of Engineering offers an optional housing program for freshmen known as the Engage Learning Community. This community gives you the opportunity to live in the same residence hall close to other first-year engineering students. Since you will be taking common classes with your neighbors, it is easier to share notes, form study groups and develop a sense of camaraderie. You can find more information on residence halls at the UT Housing website.  To check out information on meal plans and campus dining services online, visit the UT Campus Dining website

Where can I find a tutor?

The Student Success Center on campus has tutoring information available.  The Engineering Diversity Office has tutors available for engineering first year subjects.  The Engineering Fundamentals Program has tutoring for EF classes through Supplemental Instruction.

How can I study abroad?
You will want to begin by visiting the Center for International Education on campus.  They offer information sessions Monday – Friday at 2:00pm.  You will also want to follow the steps provided on the Engineering Study Abroad website “Getting Started.”
