CE 210 - Geomatics

Catalog Description

Introduction to the measurement, representation, analysis, management, retrieval and display of spatial data concerning both the earth’s physical features and the built environment. Covers land and construction surveying, controls, error analysis, use of CADD and an introduction to global positioning systems (GPS) and geographical information systems (GIS) used in civil engineering.

4 credit hours (3 lecture, 1 lab)

Textbooks and Resources

  • Geomatics - by Barry Kavanagh, Prentics Hall Publisher, 2003
  • A surveyor’s field notebook
  • Access to personal computers equipped with spreadsheet software (e.g. Excel) and drafting software (e.g. AutoCAD) is needed to perform homework problems
  • Such access is provided through the students’ computer lab in Perkins Hall
  • Students are also required to visit and use the university’s Map Library

Course Objective

This is the first course in Civil Engineering. Students learn how measurement are used in Civil Engineering. Most of the course covers surveying techniques for measuring distances, angles, areas, volumes, and curves used in Civil Engineering. Students learn about the measurement techniques needed to plan, design, and layout Civil Engineering projects such as roadways, water and sewer lines, stormwater facilities, and building foundations. Students learn to use modern instruments and computer techniques including total stations, global positioning equipment and geographical information systems.  Emphasis is placed on understanding and quantifying the accuracy, precision, and uncertainty in the measurements taken.

The course attempts to make the students aware of the classical methods of surveying and engineering measurement as well as state-of-the-art technologies used for surveying, mapping, GIS, and construction management as it relates to the Civil Engineering profession. The course also covers materials that make up 10 percent of the Civil Engineering portion of the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying, Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Exam. The material covered in the course includes that needed to prepare for the FE Exam.  The course attempts to convey an understanding of professional and ethical respnsibilities; and recognition of the need for and the ability to engage in life-long learning.
