HEAD, DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL AND ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING

Applications and nominations are invited for the position of Professor and Head of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville (UTK). The department has a current enrollment of over 260 undergraduate and 90 graduate students, with 20 tenured/tenure-track and 4 research faculty, a support staff of 9, and research expenditures exceeding $5 million per year. The department will soon be housed in a new $25 million teaching and research facility, with groundbreaking scheduled in 2009. The department is entering a significant new era and is expected to play an important role in the College of Engineering's vision to become a leading research institution and to take advantage of unique opportunities for research partnerships with the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL); UT-ORNL Joint Institutes for Advanced Materials Sciences (JIAMS), Biological Sciences (JIBS), and Computational Sciences (JICS); the National Transportation Research Center (NTRC); as well as on-campus research centers such as the Institute for a Secure and Sustainable Environment (ISSE), the Center for Environmental Biotechnology (CEB), and the Center for Transportation Research (CTR).

Primary responsibilities of the department head are to provide visionary leadership; to encourage excellence and innovation in research, teaching, and service; to advance professional development of faculty, staff and students; to promote productive relationships with all constituents including students, parents, alumni, industry and government agencies; and to foster productive interdisciplinary relationships with a variety of entities across the University community. The next department head will have the opportunity to critically shape the future of the department through strategic hires and Governor's Chairs http://www.tennessee.edu/governorschairs/ in key areas.

Applicants must hold a doctorate degree in civil engineering, environmental engineering, or other closely related field and be eligible for appointment at the rank of full Professor. Commitment to, and knowledge of, affirmative action, equal employment opportunity and diversity are required. The successful candidate must also have a balanced perspective on research and teaching, as well as the vision and ability to lead a faculty representing a diversified range of interests. Demonstrated excellence in research, professional practice, technical leadership, management, and graduate and undergraduate teaching is preferred.
