TWO FACULTY POSITIONS IN
GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING
THE UNIVERSITY OF TENNESSEE, KNOXVILLE
The University of Tennessee, Knoxville invites applications and nominations for two faculty positions, at the rank of Full Professor, Associate Professor, or Assistant Professor in Geotechnical Engineering in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. Salary is nationally competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications. Review of applications will begin soon after their receipt, with initial search committee group review process starting in December 1, 2009, and will continue until the positions are filled.
The University of Tennessee is comprised of ten colleges and schools and is the state’s land grant and flagship research institution. The university enrolls approximately 27,000 students (21,000 undergraduate and 6,000 graduate and professional students.) The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering isscheduled to relocate to a new $25-million teaching and research facility, with the groundbreaking scheduled in December, 2009. The Department is entering a significant new era and is expected to play an important role in the College of Engineering's vision to become a leading research institution and to take advantage of unique opportunities for research partnerships with the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and the National Institute for Computational Sciences (NICS), a national NSF center recently awarded to the University and housed in nearby Oak Ridge, TN. CEE also interacts with on-campus centers including the Center for Transportation Research, Joint Institute for Biological Sciences, Joint Institute for Advanced Materials, and the state’s Institute for Public Service and Center for Industrial Services. The department has 21 faculty, and offers baccalaureate, masters, and Ph.D. degrees with concentrations in structures, construction, transportation, geotechnical and infrastructure materials, public works, environmental engineering and water resources. Currently 266 undergraduate and 92 graduate students are enrolled in the department. In 2007, the Department’s research expenditures were 5.1 million.
The Department has two vacancies in geotechnical engineering. One vacancy will be filled from the pool of qualified candidates at the rank of Associate or Assistant Professor, while the second vacancy will be filled at the rank of Professor or Associate Professor. Expertise in any area of geotechnical engineering, or a closely related field, will be considered. For an exceptionally qualified candidate at the full professor level, consideration will be given to offering a Goodrich Chair of Excellence.
Qualifications:
Required
- Earned doctorate in Civil/Environmental Engineering or closely related field at the time the position is filled
- Research and teaching interests in geotechnical engineering
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work in an interdisciplinary environment
- For appointment as an Associate or Full professor, distinguished record of scholarly, professional, and creative achievement commensurate with the rank
- Must be authorized to work in the US
Desired
- Demonstrated record of research funding and publishing in academic journals
- Registration as a professional engineer
- Ability to develop relationships with ORNL and exploit the outstanding opportunities for interaction with the laboratory
Duties
- Establish and maintain a productive, externally funded, scholarly research program
- Develop and teach courses in the applicants discipline
- Participate as appropriate in established courses offered by the department
- For Associate/Full Professor, mentor junior faculty

Knoxville is located on the Tennessee River navigation channel, and a major airport is located twelve miles from the UT campus.
