A Message from the Engineering Diversity Programs Director
The UT College of Engineering has been very successful through the years in recruiting, retaining, educating and graduating African American, Hispanic and Native American engineering students. Several initiatives have been very effective in achieving these successes including targeted recruiting, scholarship opportunities, and summer programs for middle school, high school and new freshman students. These initiatives have enabled the college to build and sustain a nationally prominent diversity engineering program. In particular, the College of Engineering is currently ranked among the top 50 universities in the nation graduating African American engineering students and has continually been ranked among the 50 universities since 1978.
The primary objective of the Office of Engineering Diversity Programs in the College of Engineering is to increase the recruitment and retention of African American, Hispanic, and Native American students pursuing degrees in engineering at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. The secondary objective is the development of a pre-college network that will increase the knowledge of and interest in engineering at both the primary and secondary levels.
The Office of Engineering Diversity Programs also coordinates program efforts with the Tennessee Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (TLSAMP) and the Pipeline Engineering Diversity Program. TLSAMP is a National Science Foundation funded program designed to increase the enrollment and graduation rates of underrepresented ethnic minorities in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The Pipeline Engineering Diversity Program funded by the Department of Energy provides competitive graduate research assistantships in the College of Engineering research labs and centers for underrepresented ethnic minorities pursuing graduate degrees in engineering.
