Mechanical, Aerospace and Biomedical Engineering Tenure-Track Faculty Position
The University of Tennessee, Knoxville

The Department of Mechanical, Aerospace, and Biomedical Engineering (MABE) at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville (UTK) invites applicants for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. Primary consideration will be given to those with research and teaching interests in Biomedical Engineering including musculoskeletal systems and analysis, cell and tissue engineering, biomechanics, bioimaging, biomaterials, biosensors, vascular fluid dynamics, soft-tissue modeling and analysis of orthopaedic devices.

Candidates applying for this position are expected to have a strong commitment to teaching excellence at the undergraduate and graduate levels, demonstrated research capabilities that will enable the development of externally funded research programs, and publications in leading, scholarly journals. Successful candidates should value collaboration with colleagues, development of new multidisciplinary research initiatives, and participation in ongoing research projects. Qualifications
This position requires an earned doctorate in an appropriate field, coupled with a clear commitment to both research and teaching. Candidates must have interests/expertise related to one or more of the areas listed above. Evidence of successful sponsored research participation is important, and some professional experience outside of academia is desirable.

Duties
Teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels is required. A strong interest in the graduate program including recruiting new students is required. Successful candidates will develop and promote individual sponsored research initiatives as well as participate in research teams with other faculty. The ability to interact effectively with industry is also important.

Opportunities for Collaborative Research
The MABE Department has 28 faculty and enrolls some 500 undergraduate and 130 graduate students. Research expenditures are currently $3.0M per year. At present there are approximately 150 students in the undergraduate program and 40 students in the graduate program in biomedical engineering. Both programs are growing rapidly. Research grants and contracts are currently at the $3.7M level and involve extensive research with top orthopaedic companies and surgeons around the world. Current faculty members in biomedical engineering are team-oriented and are very interested in collaborating with new faculty members.

Extensive opportunities for collaborative research exist at UT and within the Knoxville area. The Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge complex, which includes the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (http://www.ornl.gov) is located 25 miles from the campus of the University of Tennessee. Researchers at ORNL are very interested in collaborating with the University of Tennessee’s biomedical engineering faculty. Further opportunities for collaborations exist with faculty from the UT College of Veterinary Medicine (http://www.vet.utk.edu/), Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Materials Science and Engineering, and other academic units. Substantial opportunities exit with surgeons from the Knoxville area, including those from the University of Tennessee Medical Center (http://www.utmedicalcenter.org) and the local UT Graduate School of Medicine. Biomedical Engineering is an exciting and thriving discipline at the University of Tennessee and could be an excellent opportunity for younger faculty to launch their careers or for experienced faculty members to join an excellent team.

The College of Engineering has seven departments with 127 faculty, 1900 undergraduates and 700 graduate students.
