2008 LARSON GIVES THOMAS JEFFERSON LECTURE AT UTSI—UTSI’s leadership was exceptionally proud to host Pulitzer Prize-winning author Dr. Edward Larson as this year’s Thomas Jefferson Lecturer.
Campaign coverage for the 2008 Presidential Election fills the American airwaves these days. And, while media outlets were limited to newspapers and journals at the time, this has been true since the first real presidential election held over 200 years ago. Dr. Edward Larson, prolific author and respected authority on American history, spoke of the remarkable similarities between the ongoing campaign season and the election of 1800 to a packed auditorium during the recent Thomas Jefferson Lecture held at UTSI.
UTSI has held the Thomas Jefferson Lecture Series since 1996, hosting a Jeffersonian expert each year to come and speak on an area of Jefferson’s life. The Institute was extremely proud to host Dr. Larson for this year’s event. Larson won the Pulitzer Prize for History in 1998 for his book, "Summer for the Gods: The Scopes Trial and America’s Continuing Debate Over Science and Religion" and has authored seven books and is the co-author of seven more. He is a frequent guest on television shows such as The Today Show and History Channel programs, and his 2007 book, "A Magnificent Catastrophe: The Tumultuous Election Of 1800", America's First Presidential Campaign delves even deeper into the subject of his lecture.
STUDENT ESSAYS AWARDED AT THOMAS JEFFERSON EVENT—Brooke Hill, Huntland High School senior, Callie Dixon, Franklin County High School sophomore and Jonathon Davis, Tullahoma High School sophomore each wrote the winning essay at their respective schools for the annual Thomas Jefferson Essay Contest held in conjunction with UTSI’s annual Thomas Jefferson Lecture. Davis was announced as the overall winner during the 2008 lecture program and was awarded a $300 prize. In addition, $500 was awarded to his school for academic program development. Runner-ups Hill and Dixon each received a $150 prize, along with $250 for each of their schools.
Slots Available for UTSI's ASM Camp
There are still slots available for this summer's ASM Materials Camp for high school sophomores, juniors and seniors, set for June 23-27, 2008. This Materials Camp gives high school students a chance to perform hands-on experiments working with actual equipment and research materials in the laboratory. Experiments will be led by UTSI professors and research staff, and will delve into the areas of lasers, rockets and jets, experimental materials like carbon fiber and much more. ASM Materials Camp will turn students into material scientists for a week, studying "the stuff that things are made of," and learning principles of applied math, physics and chemistry.
The camp is sponsored by ASM and the Center for Laser Applications Department at UTSI, so there is no cost for parents, even lunch is provided. However, students applying for ASM Materials Camp should have basic knowledge of algebra, chemistry and physics, and be able to describe why they want to learn more about engineering and materials science as a possible college major and career.
For more information, contact Carole Thomas at UTSI at 865-393-7223 or visit UTSI's Web Site at www.utsi.edu. Applications are also available on the UTSI Web Site.
South Carolina State University and UT Form Partnership |
A partnership has been formed between the College of Engineering and South Carolina State University (SCSU), which is a Historically Black College and University (HBCU), with an undergraduate program in nuclear engineering.
Since SCSU does not have a graduate program, the relationship will focus on undergraduate research, capstone senior design projects and summer internships. SCSU will provide at least one nuclear engineering faculty member for ten weeks during the summer and two summer interns, Chester Rodrigues and Justin Shine, in support of the I&C research initiative. They will work at either SCSU or UT along side the Co-PIs and graduatestudents.
During this summer internship the students will learn research methods and begin tasks to be completed during the school year. Capstone senior design projects consistent with ABET accreditation criteria and collaborators at the major research universities will be identified. Monthly video conferencing meetings will also be held during the academic year to provide progress reports and receive feedback.
