Resources and Facilities

The Spallation Neutron Source at ORNL In 2000, the Univesrsity of Tennessee teamed with Battelle LLC to assume management responsibilities for nearby Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), one of the nation's prominent scientific research centers. This unique partnership has allowed the university to establish a growing number of joint research centers and interdisciplinary collaborations as well as a joint faculty program that provides many opportunities for focused student research.

ORNL is home to a number of internationally recognized research facilities, including:

  • The Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), an accelerator-based neutron source that will provide the most intense pulsed neutron beams in the world for scientific research and industrial development.
  • The High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) Center for Neutron Scattering is the highest flux reactor-based source of neutrons for condensed matter research in the United States, producing thermal and cold neutrons used to study physics, chemistry, materials science, engineering and biology.
  • The Joint Institute for Computational Science, which houses a number of leadership-class computers, including the "Jaguar," presently the 10th fastest computer in the world with a peak capability of 25 teraflops (25 trillion calculations per second)

Materials Science and Engineering Lab in SERFResearch buildings on the UT-Knoxville campus include the Science and Engineering Research Facility (SERF), a 230,000 square foot facility dedicated to research laboratories utilized by both the COE and the College of Arts and Sciences.

The COE is also currently finalizing construction plans for the Min Kao Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Building, a brand-new, state-of-the-art 150,000 square foot building that will house laboratories, classrooms and offices.

Another research facility, the Joint Institute for Advanced Materials (JIAM), a joint institute for advanced materials multidisciplinary research in the transportation field, is on the drawing board and is currently projected for construction in 2008.
