Industrial and Information Engineering- The Human Side of Engineering
Welcome to the Department of Industrial & Information Engineering at The University of Tennessee. The department offers Bachelor of Science, Master of Science and Doctoral degrees. The department also offers a dual-degree option in which both a Master of Science and a Master of Business Administration can be obtained in a two-year program. Master of Science degree with a concentration in Engineering Management is available through the Engineering Management Group of the department at The University of Tennessee Space Institute at Tullahoma.
Industrial engineering is concerned with the design of integrated systems involving people, materials, information, equipment and energy, so that the overall system functions efficiently and human needs are adequately met. Industrial engineering is distinctive in two respects: the industrial engineer typically works on problems or systems which include human beings as a major variable; and the industrial engineer is by definition a systems engineer, whose unique combination of skills can be applied to many working environments.
Industrial engineers have an almost unlimited range of career fields available, including retail distribution, banking, health-care delivery, corporate management, municipal management, aerospace systems, research groups and government employment.
