The Industrial Engineering program at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, http://www.abet.org.

Program Educational Objectives:

Our undergraduate curriculum is designed to prepare our graduates to achieve the following program objectives 3-5 years after graduation:

Objective 1: Have successful professional careers based on industrial engineering knowledge and skills that endow them to integrate, design, and implement effective ways to solve complex problems in industry.

Objective 2: Engage in professional development practices that enable them to remain competent in the ever expanding discipline of industrial engineering.

Objective 3: Provide strong leadership and quality service to their organization, community, and society.

Student Outcomes:

The current Student Outcomes for the IE Program map one-to-one to the eleven ABET mandated outcomes (Criteria 3(a) through 3(k)). The items in the following list are identified with the equivalent outcome as stated in the 2011-2012 Criteria for Accrediting Engineering Programs publication of ABET.

    • Graduates of the UTK industrial engineering program have an ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering
    • Graduates of the UTK industrial engineering program have an ability to design and conduct experiments, as well as to analyze and interpret data
    • Graduates of the UTK industrial engineering program have an ability to design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs within realistic constraints such as economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health and safety, manufacturability, and sustainability
    • Graduates of the UTK industrial engineering program have an ability to function on multidisciplinary teams
    • Graduates of the UTK industrial engineering program have an ability to identify, formulate, and solve engineering problems
    • Graduates of the UTK industrial engineering program have an understanding of professional and ethical responsibility
    • Graduates of the UTK industrial engineering program have an ability to communicate effectively
    • Graduates of the UTK industrial engineering program have the broad education necessary to understand the impact of engineering solutions in a global, economic, environmental, and societal context
    • Graduates of the UTK industrial engineering program have a recognition of the need for, and an ability to engage in life-long learning
    • Graduates of the UTK industrial engineering program have a knowledge of contemporary issues
