Undergraduate Programs

ASME Fishing Pole contest

Three degree programs are offered in this department and include mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, and biomedical engineering. During the first two years, the curricula are nearly identical and provide education in the basic sciences of physics, mathematics, chemistry, and engineering common to these fields. All curricula are designed in the upper-division years to prepare the student for professional practice or graduate study.

Additional Information

Accreditation

The ME, AE, and BME degree programs are accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). ABET accreditation ensures that graduates of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, MABE Department are adequately prepared to enter and continue the practice of engineering. Accreditation criteria require that the programs design a curriculum and educational process that will achieve defined educational objectives consistent with ABET criteria and the mission of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.

Advising

Advising

Advising of students is an essential part of the student's program in each of the disciplines. During the freshman year, all students are advised through the Engineering Advising Services; however, students are encouraged to make direct contact with the ME (J.A.M. Boulet), AE (Mancil Milligan), or BME (Mohamed Mahfouz) program coordinator of their specific interest to initiate contact with the department. After the first year, students will need to be advised in the Mechanical, Aerospace and Biomedical Engineering Department. The department follows the university's guidelines for students whose ID ends with an even number to be advised in the fall for spring and for students whose ID ends with an odd number to be advised in the spring for fall. (A last digit of zero is considered an even number.)

Any student who has earned less than 30 credit hours at UT or is on academic review must meet with Dr. Gary Smith each semester to be cleared for registration for the following semester.

Scholarships

Scholarships are available in the department as well as the college and university. Questions concerning scholarships should be directed to the Dean of Student Affairs in the College of Engineering.
