Five-Year BS/MS Program in
Materials Science and Engineering

Description

The five-year BS/MS program is designed to allow qualifying students to take up to nine hours of approved graduate courses for their senior undergraduate electives and have them count toward both their bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the University of Tennessee, thus reducing the amount of time it takes for a student to earn a master's degree.

  • Students must have an overall GPA of at least 3.4 to be admitted to the program.
  • Conditional admission may be granted after completing 64 hours of required course work while full admission is granted after completing 96 hours of required course work with a minimum overall GPA of 3.4 in required course work.
  • Students must at least have conditional admission before taking graduate courses for both their bachelor’s and master’s degrees.
  • All courses taken for graduate credit must be approved by the departmental chair of the program.  Students admitted to the program must request permission from the Graduate School to take approved courses for graduate credit.  Students admitted to the program must also follow the normal procedure for admission to Graduate School.

Applying

Detailed procedures are listed below.

  1. Admission. Interested and qualified students should fill out the upper portion of the Admission Form and return it to the Associate Department Head (Dr. Kit) for approval.  The form will then be forwarded to the Graduate School for approval.  No graduate courses can be taken until these approvals are attained.
  2. Departmental Course Approval. The student must seek departmental approval for each graduate course to be counted for both the B.S. and M.S degrees.  The Course Approval Form must be submitted to Dr. Kit prior to each semester in which a student plans to take a graduate course.  Note: MSE 511, MSE 512, MSE 513, and MSE 514 cannot be used to satisfy undergraduate MSE requirements.
  3. Graduate School Course Approval. The student must also seek Graduate School approval prior to registering for each graduate course using the Senior Requesting Graduate Credit form which can downloaded at http://gradschool.utk.edu/gradforms.shtml (look in the right-hand column).  This form should be returned to Dr. Kit for processing.  Students admitted to the five-year BS/MS program can disregard the note above the student signature line.
  4. Complete Admission Form.  When all graduate courses to be taken are identified and approved by the department, the lower portion of the signed Admission Form is filled out, signed by the Associate Head and submitted to Dr. Parang for approval of the graduate courses to be used to satisfy BS degree requirements.  This should be done by the beginning of the student’s last semester of their BS degree, at the latest.  The courses will appear in DARS under “Masters Concentration” (e.g., Materials Science and Engineering – Masters Concentration).
  5. Applying to Graduate School. Students admitted to the program must also follow the normal procedure for admission to Graduate School. Admission to the Five-Year BS/MS Program does not automatically admit them to Graduate School.

Additional Information

This program is designed for students pursuing their MS degree at UT. Other universities may not accept these courses for graduate credit since they were used to satisfy requirements for the BS degree.

When registering for graduate courses, make sure to register for Graduate credit and not Undergraduate credit.
