Dr. Irene Paulauskas, Recognized by American Ceramic Society
October, 2009
Dr. Irene Paulauskas, Former UT Graduate Student of Dr. Roberto Benson, received a Second Place Award in the Scanning Electron Microscopy Category in the 2009 Ceramographic Competition of the American Ceramic Society. The Award-Winning entry was entitled: “Zinc Oxide Photoanode Instability in Photoelectrochemical Cells for Hydrogen Production.” The 2009 Ceramographic Competition was held as part of the 111th Annual Meeting of the American Ceramic Society in Pittsburgh, PA, October 25-30, 2009. Subsequent to the completion of her Ph.D. degree, Dr. Paulauskas is currently residing in England. Her research was carried out at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory under the supervision of Drs. Lynn A. Boatner and Gerald E. Jellison, and Prof. Roberto Benson was the Chair of her Thesis Committee at UT. Dr. Paulauskas found that the degradation processes that take place during the operation of a photoelectrochemical cell employing a zinc oxide photoanode resulted in the formation of unusual surface structures like those shown in the accompanying figure. Dr Paulauskas worked with Larry Walker, an ORNL staff member, to show that these dendritic features were, in fact, composed of metallic zinc resulting from the photoanodic decomposition of ZnO.
