Welcome, students, to the new Career Services version of @COE. This e-newsletter will reach you weekly (biweekly through the summer months) with announcements, news, articles and opportunities from the fine folks in Dunford Hall.

Career Services Announcements

EASTMAN CHEMICAL LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM NOW ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS!

Note – This is a Leadership Development Program and not a job.

$350.00 stipend to be paid when all meetings are completed. Must apply through HIRE-A-VOL by September 8th with accepted candidates notified on September 14th.

Eastman manufactures and markets chemicals, fibers and plastics worldwide. It provides key differentiated coatings, adhesives and specialty plastics products; is a major supplier of cellulose acetate fibers; and produces PET polymers for packaging. Juniors with a 3.0 GPA and above are encouraged to apply for this competitive program. Students must be majoring in one of the below disciplines:

• Mechanical Engineering

The program will run through both Fall 2009 and Spring 2010 semesters and will include a total of seven sessions taught by Executives at Eastman (see HIRE-A-VOL for complete schedule). Participants will meet in the West Wing of the Haslam Business Building between the hours of 6:00 -8:00 pm for the majority of the sessions. Sessions start on September 30th.

Upon successful attendance of all mandatory sessions, a $350 stipend and certificate of completion will be awarded to each participant at the final awards dinner.

Career Success for Engineers Kick-Off

Sign Up Now for Resume Critiques/Mock Interviews with Company Representatives on September 16th - FOR ENGINEERING STUDENTS ONLY!

CS ResumeLimited number of appointments available.CS Interview

Participating companies include: Eastman Chemical, ALCOA, Eaton Electrical, TVA, Shaw Industries, Analysis & Measurement Services (AMS), DENSO, Alstom Power, FBI, B & W and Y-12.

Mock Interview/Resume Critique with Engineering Company Representatives –Engineering students can sign-up through the Hire-A-VOL system and schedule a 30-minute resume critique or mock interview with recruiters from area engineering companies. Students must sign-up for an appointment and must bring a copy of their draft resume to the appointments. The representatives will discuss how to improve resume or interview skills and offer individual advice. The appointments will not be for actual job opportunities, but will be general advice sessions to assist students with skills. Open to engineering students looking for internships, co-ops and full-time positions.

10 am — 3 pm Appointments required through HIRE-A-VOL and will be held at UT Career Services – 100 Dunford Hall.

Instructions: Open your HIRE-A-VOL account and do a search using the keyword "Engineer" under the Jobs - Jobs for UT Students/Alumni screens. Look for the Engineering Resume Critique and/or the Engineering Mock/Practice Interview schedules on September 16th in the "Jobs" list and then click on the title. When the description opens, choose your appointment time on the right and submit. It will require that you have a resume in the system to make the appointment but this does not need to be a "final" resume as it is only used to schedule the appointment. After you have a final resume, go back into HIRE-A-VOL and update with your new resume to start using for job submittal. If you want to do both the resume critique and mock interview, you must sign up for both appointments.

EF 301 — Career Services for Engineers

JUST OPENED MORE CLASS SPOTS TO MEET DEMAND – SIGN UP NOW!

Planning your class schedule for Fall 2009? Don’t forget to register for EF 301 — Engineering Career Planning and Placement! This class is offered each Spring and Fall semester and is taught at Career Services, 100 Dunford Hall on Mondays, 1:25 – 2:15 pm. This class is a perfect fit for all juniors and seniors and will equip students with the right tools to land that great job. The class is offered on a 1-hour Satisfactory/No Credit basis and is taught by Career Services Consultant for the College of Engineering, Leslie Fox. Expect visits from company representatives, tips and tricks from HR Recruiters, advice on resumes, cover letters, interviewing and salary negotiation and learn the ways you can stand out and get noticed at the job fairs.

Fall 2009 Career Services Important Dates

Remember that all December 2009 and May/August 2010 graduates need to have a resume on the HIRE-A-VOL system and be “job-fair” ready by September 1st! Expect to start searching for jobs, submitting your resume for interview consideration, talking to recruiters and begin making decisions about your future as soon as you return to campus for the Fall semester. Over half of the job offers for May graduates are usually made and accepted by January 1st! Resume critiques and mock interviews are available by appointment at Career Services year-round.
