James T. Pippin, director of Diversity Programs in the College of Engineering, received the prestigious Outstanding Minority Engineering Program Director's Award at the 29th Annual Conference of the National Association of Multicultural Engineering Program Advocates (NAMEPA) in Atlanta, Ga., January 25, 2008. Pippin was selected by a unanimous vote of NAMEPA's Board of Directors.
Since 1979, the National Association of Multicultural Engineering Program Advocates has served to increase the effectiveness of educators, corporations, government agencies and nonprofit organizations. NAMEPA is committed to increase the number of traditionally underrepresented minority engineers by providing a comprehensive overview of the total minority engineering effort and the challenges inherent in developing a minority engineer. NAMEPA holds as its core values: Appreciation of Diversity, Collaborative Efforts, Volunteerism, and Professionalism. NAMEPA's members represent 98 institutions and directly reach more than 32,000 students. The College of Engineering at The University of Tennessee has been an Institutional Member of NAMEPA since 1979.
Dr. Bruce J. MacLennan, associate professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, has been appointed founding editor-in-chief of the International Journal of Nanotechnology and Molecular Computation (IJNMC), scheduled to begin publication in January 2009.The journal will be published quarterly online and in print, with approximately five research articles per issue and aims to publish groundbreaking and innovative research in nanotechnology and molecular computation, with a focus on the fruitful interdisciplinary field where nanoscience and computer science meet. All submissions will be double-blind refereed.

Professor Vijay Chellaboina, Associate Professor in Mechanical, Aerospace, and Biomedical Engineering department, has recently co-authored the book Nonlinear Dynamical Systems and Control: A Lyapunov-Based Approach (Princeton University Press, March 2008). He is also a co-author of Impulsive and Hybrid Dynamical Systems: Stability, Dissipativity, and Control (Princeton, 2006) and Thermodynamics: A Dynamical Systems Approach (Princeton, 2005).
Nonlinear Dynamical Systems and Control provides an exhaustive treatment of nonlinear systems theory and control using the highest standards of exposition and rigor. This graduate-level textbook goes well beyond standard treatments by developing Lyapunov stability theory, partial stability, boundedness, input-to-state stability, input-output stability, finite-time stability, semistability, stability of sets and periodic orbits and stability theorems via vector Lyapunov functions. A complete and thorough treatment of dissipativity theory, absolute stability theory, stability of feedback systems, optimal control, disturbance rejection control and robust control for nonlinear dynamical systems is also given. This book is an indispensable resource for applied mathematicians, dynamical systems theorists, control theorists and engineers.
Dr. Arun Chatterjee, professor in the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering, gave a lecture on the campus of Indian Institute of Technology - Madras in Chennai, India, December 18, 2007. The topic was "Intermodal Freight Transportation in USA," and the lecture was organized by the Chennai Chapter of Institute of Urban Transport (India). The attendees were professors and graduate students of civil engineering from two universities: IIT - Madras and Anna University.
Dr. David "Butch" Irick, research assistant professor in the Department of Mechanical, Aerospace and Biomedical Engineering, is working with Power Source Technologies to develop a simple and unique high-torque rotary engine with a myriad of military, industrial and commercial applications. The engine, dubbed "the Legacy," is a dream of Mr. Bart Watkins, chairman and chief executive officer of Power Source Technologies, whose partners include the University of Tennessee, Oak Ridge National Laboratory and Oak Ridge Tool-Engineering Inc. The company's mission is to revolutionize the design of the internal combustion engine. For more information and to read the entire article, click here.

James Pippin, director Diversity Programs was the guest speaker for the Knoxville Technical Society Monday, January 28, 2008, at the Crown Plaza Hotel in Knoxville. Pippin's topic was "Update on Diversity Programs in the College of Engineering." Pippin presented three outstanding African American College of Engineering students to the audience: Brandice Green, Ph.D. candidate in materials science and engineering; Tiffany McDavid, senior in biomedical engineering; and Mieah Turner, senior in civil engineering. Students had a chance to discuss their majors and research projects. The members of the Knoxville Technical Society were very impressed with each student. Songnan Yang, doctoral student in electrical engineering, was awarded "Best Paper" at the 2008 IEEE Radio and Wireless Symposium student competition last week in Orlando, Fla. Seventy-five students from about 59 countries submitted research papers and only 13 finalists were selected. Yang was selected by a panel of 17 judges to receive the award, which comes with a $1,500 check and payment of all travel expenses related to the conference. Yang is a Ph.D. student of Dr. Aly Fathy, associate professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.
