Office of Professional Practice News

Suzanne Sawicki mans the Office of Professional Practice display as a student stops by to check out some literature during Engineers Day activities Oct. 16. The table was a popular stop early in the day, with many students taking advantage of engineering co-op and internship information, as well as giveaways from Exxon Mobil, Reckitt Benckiser, International Paper, EMJ, Denso Manufacturing and Kimberly-Clark.

Featured student: Nickyla Alliowe

Nickyla Alliowe (pictured below, right) is a UT College of Engineering alumnus who continues to move onward and upward with her life and education.

Nickyla is a Spring 2008 graduate who earned a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering degree with cum laude honors. During her time as a College of Engineering student, she completed three co-op rotations with Dow Chemical Company, working in South Charleston, West Virginia, Freeport, Texas and Eden Praire, Minnesota.

Her successful co-op experience and status as a good student paved the way for her stint as a Co-op Ambassador, representing the Office of Professional Practice from Fall 2006 until Spring 2008. Nickyla received the prestigious Goodrich Service Award for exceptional effort to students and staff in the Office of Professional Practice.

Nickyla has now moved on to medical school in Louisville, Kentucky, and is really enjoying her time there.

“Medical school is great!” Nickyla said. “It is a lot of work and a lot of late nights … but I find pleasure in doing it. "

“The classes themselves are not hard as in concepts like engineering but rather they are hard as in volume," Nickyla said. "There is so much to know and so little time to know it in ... I am amazed at how I have managed to memorize and retain these past couple of months but it is constant work for me.”

The Office of Professional Practice is proud of Nickyla’s accomplishments and is also proud to have been part of her educational experience!

UTSI News

Professor Roy J. Schulz was honored with a retirement ceremony in Sept. in gratitude for his 29 years of service to the University of Tennessee Space Institute.

A faculty member and long-time chair of UTSI’s Mechanical, Aerospace and Biomedical Engineering (MABE) Department, Dr. Schulz was also heavily involved in several research projects at UTSI. Schulz was responsible for the design and development of the high temperature combustion system for the magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) facility at UTSI as well as for part of the heat recovery systems in the exhaust system of the facility. He also helped support several other major research projects at UTSI for the US Department of Energy and for NASA.

At the retirement ceremony, Interim UT Associate Vice President for UTSI Dr. Angie Bukley bestowed upon Dr. Schulz the title of Professor Emeritus, making him only the fourteenth to earn this status from UTSI. UTSI Support Council Chairman Dick Farrar and Members John Greeter and Dr. Roger Crawford presented Dr. Schulz with a Support Council plaque in recognition of his service to UTSI.

MINDS IN MOTION AT UTSI—The University of Tennessee Space Institute (UTSI) recently hosted approximately 300 eighth graders from East Middle School, West Middle School and St. Paul Catholic School. Divided into several smaller groups, the eighth graders toured the labs at UTSI and launched bottle rockets as part of the Minds in Motion program.

Materials Science and Engineering News

Dr. George Pharr was selected as one of the inaugural class of the Chancellor's Professors. This designation recognizes extraordinary, nationally or internationally recognized, scholarly attainment in an individual discipline or field as well as a record of excellence in teaching and service to UT. The ceremony for the inaugural class of the Chancellor's Professors took place on Monday October 21 at the University Center.

Materials Science and Engineering Students Tour ALCOA

Ever wonder why ALCOA has that big tower? Ask an MSE student that recently toured the hot and cold rolling facility at the ALCOA plant in Alcoa, Tennessee. During the tour the students followed a 22” thick ingot Al getting hot then cold then rolled down to the thickness of a soda can. The host of the ALCOA tour was Barbara Hyde, ALCOA engineer, graduate of Colorado School of Mines, and mother MSE Senior Carolyn Kidwell. Barbara feels Carolyn just inherited that MSE gene and chuckled that Carolyn is using some of the same texts she did during her undergraduate days.
