Engineering Professional Practice Student Feature
Featured student: T.J. Ward
T.J. Ward is a civil and environmental engineering major who accepted a co-op with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. During his second rotation during the Summer 2010 semester, he wrote the following about his experience:
“I worked as a quality assurance representative for numerous project sites, alongside office engineers and project engineers. Each day I went out on site and inspected for quality construction of the project and safety precautions. In relation to the operations, I was more of the eyes and ears for the office engineers and project engineers and would report back to them after my inspections each day.
“I am also involved in some of the work associated with office engineers, such as cost-estimate analysis and our modification process. I am surrounded by great people, and I love having the opportunity to go out on site and learn hands-on, as well as having a chance to do some of the behind-the-scenes work in the office.”
By participating in company meetings, Ward said he learned about safety precautions, scheduling, payments and progress.
“I was able to learn each day and was surrounded by a great group of coworkers who were willing to help me with anything I needed.
“I took part in the 30-hour OSHA training and received certification and also was involved in other training opportunities within our office … I was able to continue learning more about reading drawings and applying them to work in the field.”
Ward said the most valuable benefit he received by accepting the co-op was the “job opportunity, experience and possibility for a future career… This is a great opportunity to work with very knowledgeable and helpful coworkers. It also is a government job, which includes great pay and benefits.”
Students may read more about their peers’ co-op/internship experiences by logging into their Engineering Professional Practice profile via www.coop.utk.edu, clicking “Resource Library” (on the left margin) and selecting “Students at Work – In Their Own Words.”

Tennessee Apprentice Program News
Program Helps UT Students Learn About Careers
The Office of Alumni Affairs is currently accepting alumni host applications for the 2011 Tennessee Apprentice Program. Alumni host applications are due Jan. 7, 2011.
The Tennessee Apprentice Program is entering its third year and has received very strong feedback from both students and alumni. This is an excellent way to help a UT student and to be involved with your alma mater.
A UT student will meet you at your work place for a day or half-day to learn about his or her intended career field. Students and alumni have a month (including spring break) to schedule a date so that students may meet with alumni in Knoxville, other cities or their hometowns. Students and alumni are matched based on major/career interest and location.
Please visit the Tennessee Apprentice Program Web site for more information and for the application. If you have any questions, please send an e-mail to tnapprentice@utk.edu.
