COE Student, Business Partner Have a Shot to Win Big... Again!

How's the Living Inc., a company that operates www.howstheliving.com, which was founded by Aeron Glover, a senior in the Department of Industrial and Information Engineering, and Kaliv Parker, a junior in the College of Business, has made it to the top 20 in a national competition sponsored by Intel. The grand prize is $100,000. The competition is hosted on facebook.com, and the process to determine the winner will be partially based on the actions of Facebook users. Governor's Chair Professor Serves as Part of the U.S. Delegation at Workshop

Dr. Howard Hall, Governor's Chair Professor in the Department of Nuclear Engineering (NE), served as part of the U.S. delegation at a U.S.-South Korea-Malaysia International Workshop on Safeguards Curriculum Development. This meeting was focused on developing curricula that incorporates the "3S" concept (safety, security and safeguards) for nuclear specialists. This is particularly important for nations considering developing nuclear power production for electricity (such as Malaysia).

The meeting was held at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM, the National University of Malaysia), which is putting together nuclear "3S" programs in the Faculty of Science and Technology and the Faculty of Law (roughly equivalent to UT's College of Engineering and College of Law). The UKM program in the Faculty of Science and Technology is using the UT certificate in nuclear security in the NE derpartment as one of the models for its program.

EECS Faculty Member Elected Fellow of IET

Dr. Fangxing (Fran) Li, associate professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS), was recently elected as a Fellow of IET (formerly IEE) for his industrial and academic contribution to power system economics and market operation. After receiving his Ph.D. from Virginia Tech in 2001, Li worked as a senior and then principal R&D engineer at ABB Inc., a global leader in power and automation technology, to lead the GridViewTM development from scratch. GridViewTM is a power market simulation tool that is now globally deployed at numerous power utilities and Independent System Operators (ISOs). After joining UTK in 2005, Li continued research in power system economics, which has led to many papers published in the most prestigious journals in his field. Li also made a number of contributions to other areas in electric power systems such as renewable energy integration, smart grid, power system computing, distributed energy resources and distribution systems. Li has about 130 technical publications, including more than 40 journal papers and book chapters.

Founded 140 years ago, IET (Institute of Engineering and Technology), as well as its predecessor, IEE (Institute of Electrical Engineering), is a highly respected international, professional society in electrical, manufacturing and systems engineering with more than 150,000 members from 127 countries.

Engineering Professional Practice Student Feature

Featured Student: Arpit Dave

This week’s student is Arpit Dave, an electrical engineering major who is on a co-op assignment with Shaw Industries in Dalton, Ga.

Dave tells us what what his responsibilities were: “I worked in the corporate engineering department," Dave said. "My responsibilities were to help the senior project manager manage large projects for the company. They consisted of electrical engineering and designing for large plants, communicating with contractors to have projects bid on, overlooking contractors and working on adding electrical systems to plants. I also did analysis of sensors, analyzed ways to improve machine performance and optimized output.”

During the assignment, Dave said the key lesson he learned was “to quickly look up information and have answers available at hand." He also said that the most valuable benefit to a co-op assignment was “gaining experience in his field."

Students may read more about their peers’ co-op/internship experiences by logging into their Engineering Professional Practice profile via www.coop.utk.edu, clicking “Resource Library” (on the left margin) and selecting “Students at Work – In Their Own Words.”

For information on engineering co-op and internships, contact Engineering Professional Practice at coop@utk.edu or 865-974-5323.
