An international collaboration, led by UT faculty member Dr. Michael Langston, a professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, has solved a long-standing mathematical problem with help of the Kraken supercomputer

In 1930, O. H. Keller posed a basic question about tiling n-dimensional space. In the 80 years since, all attempts to resolve the conjecture have been rebuffed. Now, collaboration between a research team at the University of Victoria (Canada), led by Dr. Wendy Myrvold, and a team at the University of Tennessee (US), led by Dr. Michael Langston, has finally produced a complete answer to the question. Instrumental in this effort has been the use of Tennessee’s new Kraken supercomputer, the world’s fastest academic machine and a vital part of TeraGrid, NSF’s powerful computational platform for open scientific research.

Keller’s conjecture asks whether it is possible to tile n-dimensional space with n-dimensional cubes, without having any two cubes share a common side. For example, if n=2 this is equivalent to tiling a wall with square tiles so that no two tiles line up perfectly side by side. In 1987, it was shown that Keller’s conjecture could be reformulated as a variant of the clique problem, a foundational combinatorial question in graph theory. It is this formulation that was attacked in order to resolve the conjecture. It had previously been shown that the conjecture was true for n<= 6 and false for n>=8. The n=7 case, however, had resisted all prior approaches. This work has finally closed the door and led to a complete solution (the conjecture turns out to be false for n=7).

The techniques and algorithms developed are now being applied to solving a variety of fundamental problems in mathematics, chemistry and other fields.

Office of Professional Practice Spotlight

OPP logo

Dr. Haitao LiaoThe College of Engineering welcomes Todd Reeves as the new director for the Office of Professional Practice. Todd started in this role Jan. 1, 2010 after serving 21 years in private industry where he focused on new product development, team leadership, and customer relationship management.

Most recently Todd was with Emerson, working for the Knoxville-based Machinery Health Management division as a senior staff engineer and product manager. Prior to that Todd worked for General Dynamics Electric Boat division in Groton , Connecticut, as a sound and vibration design engineer.

“The combination of Todd’s engineering and marketing background uniquely qualifies him for working with employers, faculty and students to further UT’s engineering co-op and internship program,” said Dr. Masood Parang, associate dean for Academic and Student Affairs.

Since moving to Knoxville in 1991, Todd has been an active member of the Knoxville community, leading and participating in various civic organizations. Todd holds seven patents in the area of machine condition monitoring, has been a conference speaker, and has published 20 articles and presentations in various conference proceedings and trade journals. He holds a BS and MS in mechanical engineering, as well as an MBA from Tennessee Tech University in Cookeville, Tennessee.

Student Spotlight

Will Martin

Featured student: Rebecca MacDonald (Left) with Jennifer McCottrell

Rebecca MacDonald is a junior in chemical engineering who worked her first co-op rotation with International Paper, in Courtland, Alabama, during the fall 2009 semester. During her work term, she wrote:

“As a co-op, I've been able to do a lot of work around the mill and have been able to see all parts of the mill. I think, all in all, getting a feel for how the work-world functions is the most important part of any co-op or internship. It gives true meaning to my studies and helps me to learn how to better prepare myself for my own career some day.

“In this picture we are above the No. 2 Recovery Boiler; this boiler burns black liquor. Black liquor is made when white liquor breaks down wood chips so that it can be used to make paper.  The black liquor will eventually become white liquor again.

“We are in the precipitator, which removes black liquor, ash, and other chemicals from the air before it is cleaned and released into the atmosphere. We were checking the cleanliness of the precipitator.”

Rebecca is scheduled to return to International Paper for her second rotation during the summer 2010 term. She is pictured (at left) with International Paper employee Jennifer McCottrell.
