Bloom Designated Associate Director of Center for Materials Processing

Dr. Everett E. Bloom
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The University of Tennessee's Center for Materials Processing (CMP) has named Everett E. Bloom as the center's new associate director.
Bloom, who was the Director, Metals and Ceramics Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) from 1999 to 2006, has both Ph.D. and M.S. degrees in metallurgical engineering from UT, and received a B.S. degree in that same field from the South Dakota School of Mines.
Bloom's career association with ORNL spans over four decades, and his primary field of research includes the effects of nuclear irradiation on the mechanical properties of metals and alloys.
Bloom is an Elected Fellow in the American Nuclear Society and also of the ASM International. He currently serves on the National Materials Advisory Board (part of the National Research Council's Division on Engineering and Physical Sciences) and is also a member of the UT College of Engineering's Department of Chemical Engineering Advisory Board. He received the UT College of Engineering's Nathan W. Dougherty Award in 2003.
Bloom will join CMP Director Carl McHargue and a multi-disciplinary group of faculty and engineering students who conduct research under the auspices of the center, which was created as a Center of Excellence in 1985 by the State of Tennessee.
CMP offers many opportunities for collaboration with researchers from other disciplines, universities and institutions while allowing its partners in industry and government to reap the benefits of joint research in materials science and processing.
"We are delighted to have a researcher, administrator and engineer of Dr. Bloom's reputation join the CMP," said McHargue. "As the university and ORNL place increasing focus on the importance of materials research, Dr. Bloom will provide a considerable breadth of knowledge to our program. We will also enhance our relationship with ORNL through Dr. Bloom's long association with that facility."
