Civil and Environmental Engineering Professor Appointed to State Board

KNOXVILLE, Tenn.–Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam has appointed Dr. George Hyfantis, an adjunct professor in the University of Tennessee, Knoxville’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering to the new combined Tennessee Underground Storage Tank and Solid Waste Disposal Control Board. This new board combines the regulatory oversight functions of the former Petroleum Underground Storage Tank Board and the Solid Waste Disposal Control Board. This regulatory board consists of fourteen members, each representing specific interests ranging from the waste management and petroleum industries to the environmental community. Dr. Hyfantis was chosen to represent an institution of higher learning.

He has been an adjunct professor in civil engineering for over thirty years, teaching mainly the graduate course Solid and Hazardous Waste Management, CEE 558. He brings his valuable and broad experience in the private sector both to his graduate class and to the new board. Dr. Hyfantis has served previously on the Underground Storage Tank Board as the environmental representative, and also served as chairman for ten years. He is also on the Solid Waste disposal Control Board as an industrial representative.
