College of Engineering Announces New MSE Department Head

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Dr. Way Kuo, Dean of the University of Tennessee College of Engineering, has appointed Dr. George Pharr as department of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE).

Dr. Pharr had been serving as interim department head since the resignation of the late Dr. Ray Buchanan, who died in January of 2006.

Dr. Pharr received his Ph.D. from Stanford University, and joined the COE faculty as a professor in the MSE department in 1998. He is also a UT/ORNL Collaborating Scientist.

During his career at UT, Dr. Pharr has been the recipient of numerous research and teaching awards, including the College of Engineering Research Fellow Award in 2003, 2004 and 2005; the Chancellor's Research and Creative Achievement Award in 2004; and the ISI Highly Cited in Materials Science Recognition in 2003.

Dr. Pharr is an internationally respected scholar and researcher in the areas of mechanical behavior of materials, nanoidentation and thin film mechanical properties.

"I am pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Pharr as head for the materials science and engineering department," said Dr. Kuo. "I expect the MSE department to continue its forward momentum under his leadership."
