Course Description:
This course covers the basic concepts and techniques of the field of
radiation protection. The principal emphasis will be on giving students
a grounding in the basic principles of the field and practice in
radiation shielding computer methods in common use.
Required Text: Shultis, J.K.; and Faw, R.E., Radiation Shielding,
Prentice-Hall, Inc., Upper Saddle River, NJ, 1996.
Course Objectives:
By taking this course, the student should gain a basic understanding
of:
-
Basic concepts of radiation protection
-
Basic principles interaction of neutral particles (neutron and photon)
with matter
-
Common sources of neutron and photon radiation
-
Basic concepts of dosimetric response functions
-
Hand calculation for dose rates from simple geometric configurations of
sources and shielding
-
Physical and numerical approximations inherent in the most commonly used
computer codes in the field.
-
Practice in using common shielding tools.
Grading: The final grade will be based on four criteria:
-
Test #1 25%
-
Test #2 25%
-
Final exam 25%
-
Homework 25%
A ten-point scale will be used to assign grades.
