The meeting was called to order, Dan Ingersoll presiding. A quorum of the executive committee was present. This was the last meeting for the 1998/99 executive committee.
John DeClue provided copies of the Treasurer's Report and the Budget for the past month. The proposed budget for the new fiscal year will be submitted for Board approval at the July 19 meeting.
The teacher's workshop that is co-sponsored with UT is still planned for July.
There were no UT students that needed support for the annual meeting, so the requested $250 was donated to the general fund for the special student activities at that meeting.
One of the UT students who was asked about annual meeting funding sent a request for us to help finance his attendance at a topical meeting in which he will be presenting a paper. A motion was made to contribute $400, but the motion did not pass. Discussion centered around the idea that this type of support to students is a good idea, but we need to formulate a policy on it and provide information to all of the students for fairness. The scope of the ad hoc committee previously formed to address our student scholarship policies will be expanded to also consider appropriate policies for other forms of student support.
Plans are being made to hold a meeting/function with the student section in the fall to discuss ways that we can support them and to let them know about some of our activities.
ANS headquarters is promoting some special events for students at the next (June) annual meeting. The program is called "Celebration of Students", and it is suggested that local sections contribute toward the costs for the students to attend (they suggest $250). UT professors are going to check with the students that are planning to attend, to see if they have expenses that are not already covered.
We are in need of a program chair for next year. Discussion will continue at next month's meeting to possibly streamline the jobs of putting together the program, making location arrangements, and sending out announcements. There was also some discussion about possibly changing the standard dinner meeting dates, so that they do not conflict with the Health Physics Society meetings. Judy Fissel is working on finding an array of good places to hold dinner meetings and is looking for suggestions.
The awards committee is looking for input soon on possible candidates for national ANS awards. There are many awards (see the ANS.org web site) for which there is not a lot of competition, but we need to get started early.
Selected sections of the monthly executive committee meeting minutes are being posted on the home page. These will appear shortly after the minutes are approved at the following month's meeting.
The next newsletter is planned for July.
