ANS Headquarters is promoting a membership campaign to try to get 2000 new members by the year 2000. As part of this, they have asked for a list of local members, and the local section will get $1 for each member on the list. Also, for each national member that the local section can recruit, the section will receive $10.
The teacher's workshop being planned for July is filled at 45 registrants, with an additional 10 people on a waiting list.
ANS headquarters is promoting some special events for students at the next (June) annual meeting. The program is called "Celebration of Students", and it is suggested that local sections contribute toward the costs for the students to attend (they suggest $250). UT professors are going to check with the students that are planning to attend, to see if they have expenses that are not already covered.
The dinner meeting for May is on Thursday, May 20. The speaker will be Dr. Bill Appleton of ORNL, who is the new Deputy Laboratory Director in charge of Science and Technology. He will speak about issues on Science and Technology from his perspective as the new Director. Awards are also planned for presentation.
The following award presentations are planned at the May dinner meeting:
A motion was made and passed to post selected sections of the monthly executive committee meeting minutes on the home page.
The next newsletter is planned for July.
The summit will be held June 1-3. The session that ANS is cosponsoring with ASQ (American Society of Quality) and SWE (Society of Women Engineers) will be held June 3 and the topic is "Waste Management Issues in the DOE".
Many good concept sketches were brought to the meeting by members. The submittals were narrowed down to two main designs. Hanna Shapira is going to work with these to add shading and details. We will decide on a final design at the next meeting.
