During FY 1996 and 1997 ORNL led a collaborative effort among five DOE
National Laboratories to perform the R&D and conceptual design for a
next-generation neutron source, the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS). The
Conceptual Design Report for SNS is complete and has been thoroughly
reviewed by DOE, and the project is preparing for a construction line item
request for FY 1999. This talk will provide an overview of collaborative
approach to designing and constructing SNS, the SNS technical reference
design and experimental plans, the proposed construction schedule, and
cost. The current program and funding status of SNS will be presented,
interactions with UTK will be discussed, and future plans for neutron
science at ORNL will be reviewed.
