Invitation

Dear Knox County Science Teachers:

Many of you attended the In-Service Day at which members of the Oak Ridge/Knoxville local section of the American Nuclear Society presented technical sessions. One of the sessions discussed nuclear technologies, with emphasis on nuclear medicine. It was hoped that we would be able to sponsor science students to come to one of our dinners.

The Education Committee of the local section would like to sponsor up to twenty middle and high school students to attend the next ANS dinner meeting. Our next dinner meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, April 22 at Buddy's Bar-B-Q Catering 5806 Kingston Pike. The meeting will begin with a social hour at 6:00 PM, followed by dinner at 6:45 PM, and the program at 7:30 PM. The program should finish around 9:00 PM. All dinner costs will be paid by the Education Committee for the first twenty students registered; however, teachers and students will be responsible for their own transportation. Substitutions may be made for students who register and then cannot make the dinner. If a reservation is made and not fulfilled, the cost of the dinner must still be pay.

The speaker will be Dr. Gary Smith, MD and the title of his presentation is "Medical Applications of Nuclear Imaging." Dr. Smith is the Director of Nuclear Medicine and Positron Emission Tomography at the University of Tennessee Medical Center. His interests include quantitative analysis of medical images. His active services in nuclear medicine include general nuclear medicine, nuclear cardiology, positron emission tomography (PET), and bone densitometry.

If you or any of your students are interested in attending this dinner meeting, please contact Julie Graudons at 576-5712(w) / 483-8584(h) or Bill Hill at 574-1554(w) / 694-8637(h) no later than noon April 21st with the names of the persons who will be attending the meeting. This meeting is open to the public. Any questions or comments should be directed to Julie or Bill.

Sincerely,

Julie A. Graudons
