Dr. George W. Kabalka

"Boron Neutron Capture Therapy: Knoxville/Oak Ridge at the Frontier of this New Cancer Therapy"

Dr. George W. Kabalka serves as the Robert H. Cole Professor of Neuroscience at the University of Tennessee. He received the B.S. degree with Honors in chemistry at the University of Michigan in 1965 and the Ph.D. degree in organic chemistry at Purdue University under Nobel Laureate H. C. Brown in 1970. He moved to Tennessee in 1970 when he was appointed to the faculty in the Chemistry Department at the University of Tennessee where he continues to serves as Alumni Distinguished Service Professor. He was appointed Professor and Director of Basic Research at the University of Tennessee Graduate School of Medicine's Biomedical Imaging Medical Center in 1984. He is currently Distinguished Professor in the Department of Radiology. Dr. Kabalka serves as a Consultant to three of the National Laboratories and is on the Advisory Boards of several Professional Societies.

Dr. Kabalka is past President of the International Isotope Society and is an active member of the American Chemical Society, the Society of Nuclear Medicine, the International Society of Magnetic Resonance in Medicine and the International Society of Boron Neutron Capture. Dr. Kabalka has published over 300 refereed journal articles and over 200 abstracts describing his research. Dr. Kabalka has also presented nearly 200 invited lectures at colleges and research institutions on nearly every continent.

Dr. Kabalka's research interests are focused on the creation of new synthetic pathways (molecular architecture) which can be utilized for the preparation of agents of use in modern medicine. He is also interested in the design and synthesis of pharmaceuticals for use in the Positron Emission Tomographic evaluation of diseases and the creation of new therapeutic agents for use in boron neutron capture therapy for cancer.
