Dr. Appleton is the Deputy Director for Science and technology at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and an Executive Vice President of Lockheed Martin Energy Research (LMER) Corporation which manages ORNL for the Department of Energy. Dr. Appleton was previously an Associate laboratory Director responsible for managing the development of the $1.3 billion Spallation Neutron Source (SNS). Dr. Appleton received his doctorate in solid state physics from Rutgers University prior to starting his career at ORNL in 1968. Dr. AppletonŐs research interests at ORNL have concentrated on the use of accelerators and lasers for fundamental research in ion beam processing for surface modification of materials and on fundamental studies of ion-solid interactions and materials characterization.
