A Message from the Associate Dean for Research and Technology

Research generated by the University of Tennessee-Knoxville College of Engineering runs the gamut of investigations ranging from the use of neutrons to study nanomaterials to the study of large scale structures (bridges, buildings and transportation systems) to the design of electronics used in harsh outer space environments to sensors used to detect hazardous compounds and terrorism activities.

COE professors are determining new methods to make and utilize alternative fuels (i.e. biofuels and hydrogen) and develop the next generation of space radiation transport codes for NASA.

Our dedication to superior research also provides students with the advantages of working on projects that are on the leading edge of science and technology. Nearly all of our college's graduate students participate in the research experience within the college and many of our undergraduate students participate through programs such as the DOE Pipeline and NSF REU programs.

In April of 2000, the UT-Battelle partnership assumed management duties for nearby Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). This partnership allies the university with one of the nation's foremost scientific research laboratories, including one of the world's largest and fastest computer facilities.

The COE is home to four research centers: the Center for Materials Processing; the Center for Transportation Research; the Maintenance and Reliability Center; and the Scintillation Materials Research Center. Each of these centers is uniquely positioned to further advance the study of specific research disciplines.

The COE's research expenditures (gifts, grants and contracts) increased from $18.2 million to $32.6 million from 2002 to fiscal year 2007, an increase of over 61 percent. Our faculty currently participate in over 270 active contracts involving federal, state, and private funding sources with current awards totaling approximately $32 million.

In 2005, the college established an in-house Office of Research, created to assist faculty, staff and students with contracts, grants and other research-related activities. Questions about the research mission and activities of the college can be addressed to me or either of our two research coordinators (Jada Huskey or Miriam Campo), or to any of our department heads and faculty.

We are excited about the UT-College of Engineering's progress, and hope that you enjoy learning more about our research program. Please feel free to contact us any time!

Sincerely,

J. Wesley Hines
