Dr. John R. Collier
ChE Department Head

The ChE department has approved a transition program for students entering the graduate program who have a bachelor's degree in a field other than chemical engineering. These students can now earn a master's degree in ChE in as little as one extra term of courses at the university.

Dr. Greg Reed
CEE Department Head

The Geotechnology and Infrastructure Materials Lab (GIML) recently acquired a 45B geotechnical drill rig mounted on a Ford F550 truck. This was made possible with resources from the engineering fee, the COE and the CEE department. It will be used in the program to perform geotechnical investigations.

All CEE graduating seniors have voluntarily taken the first engineering licensing exam. The spring 2001 graduating class achieved a 97% passing rate, well above the national average rate of 77%.

Three new faculty have joined the department. Dr. Tom Urbanik, from Texas A&M, has filled the Goodrich Chair of Excellence; Dr. Dayakar Penumadu, from Clarkson University, is an associate professor in geotechnical materials; and Dr. Bella Chu, a recent doctoral graduate from the University of California-Berkeley, has been named an assistant professor in environmental biotechnology.

CEE faculty and and alumnus have been recognized with several awards. James D. Copley Jr. is the 2001 Civil and Environmental Engineering Outstanding Alumnus; Dr. Gregory Reed has been elected president of the Tennessee Society of Professional Engineers and was presented with the "Premio Oxigeno" Award for environmental management. Dr. Edwin Burdette was awarded the Alexander Prize for his excellence in the classroom and in his pursuit of scholarship.

The William and Patricia Grecco Scholarship Endowment has been created in honor of Professor Grecco's many years of service as a former head of the department. If you wish to contribute to the endowment, contact the COE development office at (865) 974-2779.

Students and staff recently presented research papers at several conferences. Neal Whitten (doctoral student) and Allison Lockwood (senior) presented papers at the International Conference on Structural Safety and Reliability in Newport Beach, Calif.

Dr. David Goodpasture
Dr. Goodpasture
gave a talk in London, England at the Structural Faults + Repair 2001 Interna-tional Conference. Goodpasture, along with Dr. Hal Deatherage, also presented papers at the Society for Experimental Mechanics Annual Conference on Experimental & Applied Mechanics in Portland, Ore.
