Electrical & Computer
Engineering Dr. William T. Snyder ECE Acting Department Head 
Dr. Benjamin Blalock joined the ECE faculty August 1 as an
assistant professor. He was previously an assistant professor at Mississippi
State University.
Dr. Mongi Abidi, director of the Imaging, Robotics, and Intelligent
Systems (IRIS) Laboratory, has received the Science Alliance Faculty
award for 2001.
Dr. Dan Koch, coordinator of the Applied Visualization Lab,
was awarded a $250,000 continuation grant from the National Safe Skies
Alliance. The AVL is working with the NSSA and FAA to develop a software

Jeanette Myers has been hired as the principal secretary
of the IE department. Myers was a temporary pool worker at UT before

Dr. Philip Rack is the newest MSE faculty member. Rack received
his Ph.D. from the University of Florida in 1997.

MAES Interim Department Head
The UT Future Truck team recently won top awards in three
categories at the Future Truck competition in Milford, Mich.
UT's awards included best off-road performance and best teamwork,
while Dr. Jeff Hodgson was named best faculty advisor. The
team also placed second in the computer modeling competition,
finishing eighth overall out of 15 teams.
Dr. Chris Pionke was lead author for a paper describing Engage
design methodology, "Balancing Capability, Enthusiasm
and Methodology in a First-Year Design Program." The
paper was then published in the International Journal of Engineering
