Tom V. Byerley
Interim Director MRC

The MRC's 5th annual conference, MARCON 2001, was held May 6th through 9th at the Park Vista Hotel in Gatlinburg. Next yearŐs conference will be held May 5th through 8th, 2002, and is now in the planning stages. A call for papers for MARCON 2002 has been issued.

The MRC conducted its summer meeting in August at the Radisson Hotel. Highlights of the meeting included presentations on reliability strategies at Rohm & Haas, the UT-Monash University distance education program, asset management systems (DOE best practice), the future of wireless technology and a panel discussion on "The People Side of Maintenance." 35 people attended this meeting.

The Fluor Corporation awarded the MRC a $15,000 grant to be used in the advancement of programs for educating and preparing students for future roles in the maintenance and reliability field. Fluor Global Services has been one of the MRC's strongest supporters and employed eight MRC interns this summer.

MRC interim director Tom Byerley (l) accepts a check for $15,000 from Charles Bailey, Vice-President of the Life Sciences Division of Fluor Global Services.

Dr. Wes Hines is wrapping up work on a three-year MRC research project aimed at utilizing artificial intelligence techniques to monitor and validate remote condition-monitoring sensors. A successful demonstration of the system has been completed at TVA's Kingston Power Plant.

The UT-Monash University program in reliability engineering and maintenance management doubled its participation this year. Graduate level courses are offered via distance techniques with a one-week residential school mid-year here at the Knoxville campus. Student feedback has been very positive.
