The MRC's 5th annual conference, MARCON 2001, was held May 6th through
9th at the Park Vista Hotel in Gatlinburg. Next yearŐs conference
will be held May 5th through 8th, 2002, and is now in the planning
stages. A call for papers for MARCON 2002 has been issued.
The MRC conducted its summer meeting in August at the Radisson Hotel.
Highlights of the meeting included presentations on reliability strategies
at Rohm & Haas, the UT-Monash University distance education program,
asset management systems (DOE best practice), the future of wireless
technology and a panel discussion on "The People Side of Maintenance."
35 people attended this meeting.
The Fluor Corporation awarded the MRC a $15,000 grant to be used in
the advancement of programs for educating and preparing students for
future roles in the maintenance and reliability field. Fluor Global
Services has been one of the MRC's strongest supporters and employed
eight MRC interns this summer.

Dr. Wes Hines is wrapping up work on a three-year MRC research
project aimed at utilizing artificial intelligence techniques to monitor
and validate remote condition-monitoring sensors. A successful demonstration
of the system has been completed at TVA's Kingston Power Plant.
The UT-Monash University program in reliability engineering and maintenance
management doubled its participation this year. Graduate level courses
are offered via distance techniques with a one-week residential school
mid-year here at the Knoxville campus. Student feedback has been very
positive.

Dr. Kelsey Cook
MCEC Director
After a national search, Dr. Kelsey Cook, MCEC's co-technical director
for analytical instruments and a faculty member in UTŐs department
of chemistry, has been selected for the position of center director.
Dr. Paul J. Gemperline, an MCEC faculty member at East Carolina University,
has been named the 2001 Arts and Sciences Distinguished Professor
of Chemistry at ECU. It is one of the highest honors given to a member
of the ECU faculty.
