Engineering
Dr. H. Lee Dodds
NE Department Head
The NE Department has obtained approval from the UT Graduate School
to offer two new graduate certification programs, one in maintenance
and reliability engineering (MRE) and another in nuclear criticality
safety (NCS). These new programs are available to both local and distance
students, but are intended primarily for distance students via interactive
online graduate courses. Dr. Wes Hines has been selected to
serve as the first director of Extended Education for the College
of Engineering. More detailed information on these programs is posted
on the web at http://www.anywhere.tennessee.edu.
The NE department recently completed the 2001 update of its strategic
plan. First published in 1993, the strategic plan has been updated
every two years. The effort for the 2001 update, which included the
entire NE faculty, was led by Dr. Art Ruggles. A copy of the 2001
update is posted on the web at http://www.engr.utk.edu/nuclear.

ProvostŐs Research and Creative Achievement Award for his work.
Dr. Belle Upadhyaya presented three seminars to research organizations
in Brazil.
Doctoral student Jennifer Parsons-Hoff presented a paper in
Italy, and with several other graduate students selected from across
the U.S., attended the 51st Meeting of the Nobel Laureates in Lindau,
Germany.
The NE department recently made several improvements to the infrastructure
in the Pasqua Engineering Building. Several new state-of-the-art computers
