The first donor-supported scholarship in the college was named for Col. Samuel H. Lockett. Joseph E. Lopez, the Colonel's son-in-law, established this memorial scholarship through a gift of securities in 1938.
Col. Lockett's legacy is certainly impressive. Not only was he a hero of the Confederacy during the Civil War, designing the almost impregnable defenses at Vicksburg, Miss., but he also was a collaborator on the design and construction of the base for the Statue of Liberty. Col. Lockett was once head of what was then the Department of Engineering at the University of Tennessee.
The Col. Samuel H. Lockett Engineering Fund continues to provide financial assistance for future engineers. Created as an endowment, the Lockett Engineering Fund continues to grow as a portion of earnings are awarded annually for scholarships and the remainder of earnings are placed back into the principal of the gift account. Such action ensures the long-term growth of the fund as a hedge against inflation.
Supporters of the college have a unique opportunity to take advantage of a change in the endowment policy at UT. Currently, donors can establish a new, named endowment by making a financial commitment of $15,000 to the college over a 10-year period.
Effective July 1, 2000, the minimum amount needed to establish a new endowment increases to $25,000 over 10 years.
All persons wishing to execute a new endowment agreement at the $15,000 level may still do so until June 30, 2000. Such agreements will effectively be "grandfathered" so donors
making arrangements at that level will not be required to
increase their pledge during the pledge payment period.
