COE celebrates at 1998-99 honors banquet

Over 350 engineering faculty, students, staff and guests met at The Foundry banquet hall in Knoxville on April 12 to recognize academic and professional accomplishments at the College of Engineering's annual Honors Banquet. The event was sponsored by Eastman Chemical Company.

COE students enjoy the pre-dinner reception at the Foundry.

Set to the theme "Engineering the World," the evening opened with a welcome address by the College of Engineering Dean, Dr. Jerry Stoneking, who outlined the highlights of the past year.

Ms. DeVinney

After a formal dinner, Betty W. DeVinney, Vice President of Communications and Public Affairs for Eastman, was keynote speaker. DeVinney won the crowd over immediately with her humorous opening remarks which included the "top 10 list of engineering phrases..and what they really mean."

On a more serious note, she encouraged students to recognize the importance of teamwork and communications skills to their future careers.

Katy Utz, president of the Student Engineering Council, opened the awards presentation, which featured both college-wide and departmental honors.

The evening's most prestigious award, the Nathan W. Dougherty Award, was presented to UTK alumnus Joseph C. Cook Jr., chairman and CEO of Amylin Pharmaceuticals (see "Kudos" page for more details).
