Alumnus receives two
prestigious recognitions
Joseph C. Cook, Jr. (BS/IE '65) received the Nathan W. Dougherty Award from Dr. Jerry Stoneking at the 1999 College of Engineering Honors Banquet. The purpose of the award is to recognize an engineer who has brought honor and distinction to the college through his achievements. Cook also was recognized with the Outstanding Service to the University-Alumni and Friends Service Award during the 1999 Chancellor's Honors. He is currently chairman and chief executive officer of Amylin Pharmaceuticals, Inc.

Prados is honored as fellow of engineering education society
Dr. John W. Prados, Vice-President Emeritus and Professor of Chemical Engineering was named a Fellow of the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) in June. Fellow member status is a distinction conferred upon individuals who have been members of ASEE for at least 10 years and who have made valuable contributions to engineering education. Only 10 members out of an organization of more than 10,000 were chosen to receive fellow member status in 1999.

Engineering alum gears it up in Sports Car Club of America standings
Johnny Miller (BS/IE '89) is returning for the 1999 Sports Car Club of America BF Goodrich Trans-Am auto races series, competing in the No. 64 Automationdirect.com Chevrolet Camaro. Miller, sponsored by Automationdirect.com, began his professional racing career in 1994. He was voted the S.C.C.A.'s Most Improved Driver in 1998 and in 1999 he has had six top five finishes in eleven S.C.C.A. auto races. Miller lives in Johnson City, Tenn.

Nuclear Engineering department head receives national engineering award
Dr. H.L. "Lee" Dodds, professor and head of the UTK Nuclear Engineering Department, received the 1999 Arthur Holly Compton Award from the American Nuclear Society for outstanding contributions to the nuclear science and engineering education fields. He has been the NE department head since 1997 and is a fellow of the American Nuclear Society.

UT Alumnus receives
Founder's Day Medal
Dr. Mark Dean (BS/EE '79) received the Founder's Day Medal from UTK Chancellor Bill Snyder during ceremonies at the recent UT Charter Day Awards. Dean is vice-president of performance for IBM's RS/6000 Division. He is the only African-American IBM Fellow. The Founder's Day Medal is presented to alumni who exemplify post-college success and achievement.
