Walter
Odom
Co-op Director
The Kimberly-Clark
Corporation was named the 1998 Employer Excellence Award winner
by the cooperative engineering program. Past recipients include
Eastman Chemical (1997) and DuPont (1996).
Walter
Odom, director of the co-op program, has been named president-elect
for the Cooperative Education
Division (CED) of the American Society of Engineering Education
(ASEE). Since February 1997 he has served the organization as secretary/treasurer.
His role with CED will involve chairing the 2001 Conference for
Industry Education Collaboration.
The COE's
co-op activities continue to expand with 549 full-time undergraduate
students enrolled in the program. This semester 115 UTK co-op participants
are serving in engineering work assignments. Several events filled
the co-op calendar recently including the second annual Student
Leadership Conference, the Kimberly-Clark College of Engineering
Picnic, the Supervising Co-ops Workshop and the Fourth Annual Cooperative
Engineering Fair and employer appreciation dinner. The next Co-op
Engineering Fair is scheduled for Oct. 4-6. For more information
on up- coming events, please e-mail the program at: coop@nestor.engr.utk.edu.

Dr.
Roger Parsons
Program Director
Implementation
of the collegeÕs new freshman engineering program continues with
150 students enrolled in this year's transition program. Next year
the program will encompass the entire freshman class-more than 400
students.
The Engage
Program implementation team, including professors from the Colleges
of Engineering and Education and the Student Counseling Center,
has been nominated to represent the university in the competition
for the Boeing Outstanding Educator Award. This annual award is
given for outstanding contributions to the improvement of engineering
education.
Engage
faculty members have been promoting the COE's educational innovations
in national forums and paper presentations. Last fall at the Frontiers
in Education conference in Phoenix, Dr. Elaine Seat's paper,
-"Enabling Effective Engineering Teams: A Program for Teaching Interaction
Skills," received one of the Best Paper Awards.

Dr.
Tom Shannon
MRC Director
The
MRC travels a few miles south for its third annual conference,
MARCON 99. This year, participants will gather May 10-12 at the
Park Vista -Hotel in the Smoky Mountains overlooking Gatlinburg,
Tenn. In addition to keynote speakers, MARCON 99 will -offer three
parallel tracks of presentations: technology (research, new technologies,
advanced methods), practical applications (real-life experiences,
case studies, success stories) and asset management (management
strategies, financial implications, overall approaches). Networking
opportunities and relaxation times will be provided through receptions
on two evenings and a dinner outing to Pigeon Forge's Dixie Stampede.
Guests may accompany attendees on the Dixie Stampede outing for
a nominal charge. It is not too late to participate. For more
information call the MRC at (423) 974-9625, or e-mail Nancy
Perkey [nperkey@utk.edu] or Tom Byerley [tbyerley@utk.edu].
Two
MRC interns were awarded academic scholarships from the Instrument
Society of America and the Welding and Testing Technology Exhibition
and Conference (WATTEC): Taylor Schuler from Staunton,
Va., 1998 Outstanding Junior MRC Intern ($500 scholarship) and
Brent Byrd from Kingston, Tenn., 1998 Outstanding Senior MRC
Intern ($1,000 scholarship).
In
February, the first student chapter of the Society of Maintenance
and Reliability Professionals (SMRP) was chartered at UTK. With
more than 2,000 members, SMRP is the largest group representing
maintenance and reliability professionals in North America. Dr.
Wes Hines, a resident assistant professor in the NE department,
is serving as faculty advisor of the organization and Taylor
Schuler, a sophomore studying NE, has been appointed president.
American
Technologies Inc. (ATI), has rejoined the MRC. Headquartered in
Oak Ridge, Tenn., ATI is an award-winning firm providing a complete
range of environmental, engineering and technical support services
to government and commercial clients.
A grant
from the National Science Foundation's Combined Research Curriculum
Development Program continues to fund work on new curriculum resources
in maintenance and -reliability engineering. This program, a joint
effort between UT and the University of -Alabama, recently completed
the first of a three-year project. Four new courses and a teaching
laboratory are under development.
Last
fall, MRC hosted the first of a series of Executive Awareness
Seminars in cooperation with the College of Business' Management
and Development Center. The seminar introduced participants to
the critical role that maintenance and reliability play in the
success of business today. Several UT faculty presenters as well
as guests from industry led the workshop sessions. This two-day
event will be offered again in the fall. This year the MRC is
also offering a four-day seminar that will add more technical
"how-to" information. For more information contact the MRC at
(423) 974-9625 or visit the MRC web site.
