COE support can be provided in many forms

There are numerous ways to choose to financially support the College of Engineering.

A return gift envelope was included within the folds of the latest mailed issue of Tennessee Engineer. I am hopeful that this envelope will provide alumni and friends with an effective means with which to let us know about their personal and professional successes as well as serve as a friendly, convenient reminder of the importance annual gift support serves for our programs.

Several general areas for support are listed on the envelope. This year, in addition to general funding needs within the college and its associated departments and centers, you may wish to consider supporting the Engage Program, our new freshman engineering curriculum. Beginning in the Fall 1999 semester, all entering freshman in the college will proceed through the Engage Program, which is built around team communication with an emphasis on project-oriented, hands-on activities.

Most classes as well as all faculty and graduate assistants associated with this program are housed in Estabrook Hall, effectively forming a "Freshman Village." Please read more about Engage's activities in the department news section.

Some donors may be interested in creating an endowment to provide for long-term needs in the College of Engineering. Such funds are permanent in that only a portion of the earnings are spent annually for specific purposes as designated by the donor.

Earnings garnered beyond the standard percentage disbursement are directed to the principal of the account to provide a hedge against future inflation, thus protecting the integrity of the gift and ensuring that future earnings will strengthen the fund over time.

Currently, one can initiate an endowment with the University of Tennessee by providing a gift pledge of $15,000 over a 10-year period. Donors choosing to execute such an agreement are also recognized as members of the President's Club, one of the university's most noteworthy groups acknowledging benefactors, which requires a minimum total gift of $10,000 over 10 years.
