Volunteer of the Year
W. Dwight Kessel (BS/IE '50) was named the University
of Tennessee's Volunteer of the Year at a dinner of the Chancellor's
Associates in October. The award is presented annually and is
given to an individual who gives "untiring service and devotion
to the university and the community." Kessel is a member
of the College of Engineering's Board of Advisors and has also
served as chairman of the UT Development Council.
Tau Beta Pi honor presented to Chancellor Snyder
The 1998 Tau Beta Pi Standard of Excellence Award has been bestowed
upon Dr. William T. Snyder, chancellor of the University
of Tennessee, Knoxville and former dean of the College of Engineering.
The award was established to recognize alumni of the organization
who have demonstrated outstanding adherence to the ideals of Tau
Beta Pi. Snyder was honored during ceremonies in Knoxville in
December.

recognizes MAES program
The Department of Energy's Office of Industrial
Technologies recently presented an award to UTK's Industrial Assessment
Center Program, recognizing the IACÕs long-term contribution to
national energy efficiency. UTK Chancellor Bill Snyder,
who was the first director of the program more than 20 years ago,
accepted the plaque from Denise Swink, deputy assistant secretary
for the Department of Energy Office of Industrial Technology.
The IAC program is conducted through the mechanical and aerospace
engineering and engineering science department under the direction
of Dr. Richard Jendrucko.

COE student wins international
research competition
Peng Liu, a doctoral student in the
materials science and engineering department, has won the 1999
Henry Granjon Prize in the materials behavior and weldability
category from the International Institute of Welding. Liu will
accept the award for his research on creep resistance this summer
in Lisbon, Portugal.
Cummings earns national award
Dr. Peter Cummings,
a distinguished scientist at UTK and Oak Ridge National Laboratory, has earned a top national
award for chemical engineering research. Cummings received the
American Institute of Chemical Engineers' 1998 Alpha Chi Sigma
Award. Cummings develops computer-based modeling methods for a
wide variety of systems. The award was presented at the institute's
honors luncheon Nov. 16 in Miami.

Alumnus receives Denver business award
Charles L. "Jerry" Henry (BS/EP '63), chairman,
president and CEO of Johns Manville, was named 1998 Executive
of the Year by the Denver Business Journal. Henry has been with
Johns Manville, a leading manufacturer of insulation and building
products, for almost three years.

professors honored
Two College of Engineering professors have been selected as fellows
of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE),
the largest technical professional organization with more than
320,000 members in 150 countries. Less than a thousand members
of the IEEE receive this honor.
Dr. Doug Birdwell (EE) was recognized for his work in control
and information technology.

Dr. William Hamel (MAES) was honored for his use of
robotics and remote technology for nuclear, space and military
applications.
