Why Tau Beta Pi?
Tau Beta Pi's collegiate chapters elect members who have distinguished themselves with outstanding scholarship and character.

Distinguished Scholarship
High academic achievement as an undergraduate, graduate, or eminent professional is the first eligibility requirement for election to Tau Beta Pi. Students in the upper eighth of their junior engineering class are eligible for consideration in their college's Tau Beta Pi chapter. Through its high academic standards, Tau Beta Pi encourages all students to strive for academic excellence; and it holds up as models of professional excellence those who are invited to membership because of their distinction in engineering achievement.

Exemplary Character
The second eligibility requirement for Tau Beta Pi membership is good character. A Tau Beta has personal integrity, a wide range of interests, adaptability, and participates unselfishly in community and volunteer activities.

More than an Honor Society
Tau Beta Pi's goals are greater than simply recognizing outstanding engineers. The society's second objective is to "foster a spirit of liberal culture in engineering colleges". Tau Beta Pi believes that technical knowledge alone is not enough preparation for an engineer in our complex world. A liberal education creates awareness of history and future potential. It prepares the engineer to be responsive to others and to be helpfully active in his or her community.
